About the Sitar
18 to 21 strings, only 6 or 7 are plucked. The sympathetic strings vibrate to create resonance. Ravi Shankar introduced it to the West. George Harrison learned from Shankar and used it on Beatles records. The gourd resonator and long hollow neck create the distinctive tone. The bent frets allow microtonal playing.
