About the Tanpura
A drone instrument essential to Indian classical music. Four or five strings tuned to the drone notes. No frets. Over 600 years of tradition. The continuous drone provides the harmonic foundation. The rich overtones create a shimmering sound. Every Indian classical performance begins with the tanpura drone.
