Robert Moog created the first commercially successful synthesizer. The Minimoog in 1970 made synths portable. Subtractive synthesis is the most common method. Over 500,000 synthesizers sold annually. Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, and Depeche Mode defined synth music. Modern digital synths can emulate any sound.
