Invented by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian instrument maker. Made of brass but classified as woodwind due to the reed. Four main types: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone. Charlie Parker and John Coltrane defined jazz saxophone. The sound ranges from smooth to aggressive. Originally designed for military bands.
